Gulf ambient and T3 · 3 min read
Sizing for Gulf ambient
Why a unit chosen on its nameplate falls short in August, and what to select on instead.
Nameplate capacities are rated at 35 °C outdoor air, the T1 condition. T3 rates equipment at 46 °C, many Gulf specifications design above that, and a rooftop or sun-exposed unit can take in air several degrees hotter again.
As the outdoor temperature rises, air-cooled equipment loses capacity and efficiency, and its compressors run at higher pressures and can trip. A unit chosen on its nameplate falls short in August.
What to select on
Select on the capacity at the real air-on temperature and check the manufacturer's maximum operating ambient. Keep the clearances that stop a unit re-breathing its own discharge air, and shade outdoor units without blocking their airflow.
In the UAE, air conditioners are ESMA-registered and rated at T3. We quote the T3 capacity for VRF and the T1 nameplate for splits where the manufacturer publishes only T1, and we say so.
Sand, dust and the coast
Dust and sand load coils and filters faster, so fit sand-trap louvres on fresh-air intakes and shorten cleaning intervals. Coastal summers add humid fresh air, a large moisture load, and salt air that corrodes unprotected coils. Within 2 km of the sea, specify a coastal-coated coil and rinse it with fresh water every 3 months.
